When most people picture boudoir, they imagine black lace, corsets, and sky-high heels. And while those are timeless for a reason, I’ve found that the most breathtaking images come when my clients express their kind of sexy. It’s that quiet confidence that shines through when they feel completely themselves.

As a photographer who specializes in photographing women of all shapes and sizes, I have such a soft spot for women who step in front of my camera believing they’re not photogenic, until they see what I see. I know what it feels like to have a body that doesn’t always fit the “sample size” mold, and how transformative it can be to finally see yourself as art. That’s why I love helping women discover wardrobe choices that flatter, empower, and feel good.

Below are five of my favorite unexpected wardrobe choices that consistently photograph beautifully on all body shapes and sizes, while keeping the focus on your authentic sensuality.

1. The Oversized Knit Sweater or Cardigan

Why it works: A chunky knit is effortlessly sensual. The texture catches light beautifully, softening edges and creating depth. For curvier women, it also provides that comforting bit of coverage while still letting skin peek through in a natural, inviting way.

Behind the lens: I love shooting these looks near a window where the light wraps around the fabric. I’ll often guide my clients to pull the sweater slightly off one shoulder and take a deep breath – that exhale is where the magic happens.

Common mistake to avoid: Don’t choose a sweater that’s too fitted or bulky. The goal is drape, not distraction.

Styling tip: Pair it with high-waisted briefs, or nothing at all, and keep the palette neutral with cream, gray, or beige. Bare manicured feet are the finishing touch, or maybe a cozy pair of slouch socks.

2. His Shirt, Your Confidence

Why it works: Nothing says soft power like wearing his button-down your way. The structured lines of a shirt contrast beautifully with natural curves, highlighting movement and shape.

Behind the lens: I like to leave the bottom buttons undone and focus on subtle motion with the tilt of a hip, a half turn toward the light, a playful glance over the shoulder. It’s simple, but unbelievably intimate.

Common mistake to avoid: Don’t button it all the way or try to make it perfect. Let it fall loose. The beauty is in the imperfection.

Styling tip: Go for classic white or a muted tone that complements your skin tone. Bare legs and rolled sleeves complete the story.

3. High-Waisted Jeans or Trousers

Why it works: Jeans add structure and strength to a boudoir session. They sculpt the waist and accentuate curves, creating a confident, grounded energy.

Behind the lens: I often pair denim with a bralette or sheer top, shooting from slightly above to emphasize the hourglass shape. The contrast between the casual denim and soft skin feels modern and bold.

Common mistake to avoid: Avoid heavily distressed jeans or busy designs. Simple is powerful.

Styling tip: Choose denim that fits your body, not the mannequin’s. Confidence always photographs better than discomfort.

4. A Sheer, Floor-Length Tulle Robe

Why it works: Flowing fabric creates movement, softness, and a sense of fantasy. A tulle robe dances with the light, turning a simple turn or step into something cinematic.

Behind the lens: I use this look when I want to capture emotion in motion, letting the fabric trail behind or catching it mid-air. The transparency gives just enough reveal while maintaining mystery.

Common mistake to avoid: Don’t pick a robe that’s too stiff or opaque. You want airy, sheer material that catches the light.

Styling tip: Jewel tones like deep emerald, plum, or dusty rose photograph beautifully against most skin tones.

5. Simple, Athletic Underwear and a Crop Top

Why it works: Minimalism can be incredibly sexy. Athletic sets show off strength and natural curves without distractions, letting the focus rest entirely on you – your expression, your posture, your power.

Behind the lens: I love using directional lighting here to emphasize lines and form. A confident lean forward or seated pose brings out muscle definition and energy.

Common mistake to avoid: Avoid overly branded pieces or busy patterns. The simplicity is what makes it so striking.

Styling tip: Stick to monochrome sets like black, white, or gray; and let your attitude do the accessorizing.

Final Thoughts: Comfort is the Real Secret

Whether you wear lace or cotton, denim or tulle, the most magnetic photos come when you feel at ease in your skin. Try everything on, cut the tags, and choose what makes you feel beautiful, not what you think you’re supposed to wear.
